The "Pay It Forward" Badge.
To earn the "Pay It Forward" badge the applicant must teach a complete beginner to play an instrument in weekly lessons for one full season (11-13 weeks).
The purpose of this badge is to show our students the power and the challenge of music education and show the variety of ways in which music can be experienced, learned, enjoyed and taught.
Research Teaching
- Go back and review how you learnt the basics on your instrument.
- Review some articles online about teaching music.
- Prepare your teaching space and some lessons and lesson plans.
Choose a Student
- Make sure your choice is fully on board with the process and is willing to commit to a full season of lessons.
- Record a quick video at the start of your first lesson together, show them trying to play their instrument. This will be the "before" video.
- Run the lessons, adapting your approach as your student develops. Get help from your teacher if you get stuck.
Provide Outcome
- Record a quick video on your last lesson with the student, showing what they have learned with you.
- Email both videos (before and after) to SM along with a one page reflection on how the lessons went and what you would have done differently should you have the time again.
